Web Browser Wars

In one of my recent posts about a Modio issue I had a couple comments about how bad Internet Explorer is. Mattkan left a link for Firefox and for whatever reason I decided to try it out and download it. It's so much better than Internet Explorer. I thank you Mattkan for showing me to Firefox. You have saved me from the terrible browser known as Internet Explorer. I can now listen to background music on websites, have persona's, search faster, and more.

Google chrome is just slower. Also from what I heard, google chrome records personal data you actually don´t want them to have, while FireFox does not do that (with this I don´t just mean the History)

Dusty 02-17-2012 06:24 PM

I like Firefox better, even though I've had serious issues with it. It can be a memory hog and cpu hog at times, but I've always had a much better experience with it over Chrome. Chrome is just... I dunno, many small things that annoy me from Chrome. I can never remember them until I actually get on Chrome and try to use it though.

I'm aware of the private message feature. I've used it many times. It's just more fun doing it this way. To be honest though I'm not a big fan of Chrome. I enjoy Firefox much more.

Yeah when one person says something you all agree with them, ridiculous. Well heres some things you should consider.
1. More stability

Google implies that Chrome is more stable than existing browsers. A major selling point for me. As their little Google’s comic book puts it, “When you’re writing an important email or editing a document a browser crash is a big deal”.

2. More speed

Google claim that sites will download quicker on Chrome; this appears to have something to do with Chrome’s JavaScript Virtual Machine named V8. Google state that Chrome looks at the JavaScript source code and “generates machine code that can run directly on the CPU that’s running the browser”, this apparently helps speed things up.

Brendan Eich (the founder of Mozilla CTO and JavaScript creator) claims a new Firefox’s new TraceMonkey JavaScript engine outperforms V8 so this particular claim is hard to verify.

3. More secure

I like how they have built Chrome using a sandboxing technique that prevents unwanted software installing itself on your machine and stops what happens on one tab affecting what happens on another.

4. More open

Google have decided to open source the entire browser. This could be of huge benefit to the web community. Yes, I know Google has more money than God so they can afford to do this but they deserve a pat on the back for doing this.

5. More style

Google definitely lacks Apple’s style but what they’ve build here looks really slick. I’m a big fan of the smooth and uncluttered look and feel.

6. A dynamic start page

Chrome have done away with the traditional start page approach used by other browsers to display your 9 most visited pages when you boot it up.

7. More Privacy

Google have included an “Incognito window” in this build. None of your history is saved in the browser when you use this window and when you close it the cookies from that session are wiped out.

8. Better approach to blocking pop ups

Pop ups are confined to stay in the tab they came from unless you want to drag them out in to a new tab. I just tested this out on one of my favourite music sites and it works like a treat.

So wait, your source for the fact that Google is more stable is... Google? Well I'm sure they're not biased towards their own product at all... :P Also I've never had Firefox crash on me. And Google's method for separate processes doesn't seem to stop it from completely crashing anyways, from what I've heard.

They never claimed that Chrome downloads sites faster... it claims to load them faster. That's a big difference. However Chrome does do things like Javascript and HTML5 better than Firefox. But on the otherhand Chrome seems to render websites without accelerated graphics(like Firefox). This causes very noticeable pauses when changing tabs, even if the website is already loaded. It can take almost up to a few seconds for an already loaded tab in Chrome to simply render on a less powerful computer, especially if it has a lot of content. On the otherhand on slower computers Firefox is a cpu/memory hog so...

Firefox is open-source as well. Also Google is a nonprofit organization.

The best style is a flexible style, one that lets users customize their experience to their liking. Firefox does this fairly well, and Chrome may as well, but I never bothered... but I found Chrome not to be flexible at all. It's options are very limited, especially compared to Firefox.

I rarely get pop-ups in the first place with Firefox so I dunno.

I don't hate what Chrome is, it's just not suited for my taste in browsing. It has a lot of quirks that turn me off, and I'm already perfectly happy with Firefox. More choices in browsers are always a good thing :)

If you want to test the true potential of your web browser try www.20b.org note this isnt ne of those meatspin websites or anything like that, iv'e done this to 4 of my school teachers, Also it isnt a virus no matter what you may think, if it survives, your browser is glorious.

Note only works on computers

Personally, I like it better than Chrome so far. I have three browsers and this one became my default browser. I'm enjoying it deeply. Thanks again for showing me it. I would probably have not tried it if it weren't for that link and reconsidering what people were saying about it.

Side Note: Nice thread title name to whoever changed it. Read my mind.

Cat612 02-18-2012 07:59 AM

I've never really cared all that much about what browser I use, but after trying out a few, I prefer Firefox. Can't we have a decent debate without personalization? I love debating over things, but everyone is so quick to be offended. :(

Chrome is better at predicting what you are going to type into the browser bar,
BUT It uses a lot more resources than Firefox.
Opera is pretty good, if all else fails.

Quality? It's just a gaming PC that's horribly overpriced and repackaged with a fancy case to make it look "cool".

Building your own machine means you can afford even MORE quality. For the price of an Alienware machine you can build an even better quality machine, a huge-ass monitor, surround sound system and whatever else parts you may need and probably save money.

Then pay someone $50 to do it for you and still come out on top. The only thing that's probably troublesome are laptops... but chances are if you hunt you can find an equally powerful laptop at half the price of an Alienware product.

Purchasing a computer from a local computer shop instead of stores like Best Buy or directly from the manufacturer (Dell, HP) will usually get you a way better warranty and help if something goes wrong as well.

The distributor my company uses gets us up to 3 year warranties on custom built computers should anything go wrong.
