Streaming tv shows in the uk
So i have a quick question, I've been using an app to stream tv shows but I'm wondering if i am safe from the law? I searched online but the only thing that ever came up was that people distributing it had been charged. I have a tv liscense. I also read somewhere no one has ever been charged for viewing/streaming but could someone confirm this?

UK ISP's regularly send out letters if they discover you torrenting or illegally downloading ****, not sure what they do if you continue but I can't imagine it'd be much. What app do you use? If you're just streaming live TV then you're probably alright.

I use playboxhd and also i'm not downloading the videos i'm watching from the app and i'm not selling it on or anything. I'll have to look on a gov website to see the exact rules. I also know play box hd is a popular app for viewing tv shows. |

Ok thanks.

It probably doesn't work like this, but since so many people do it the chances of getting in trouble might be very small
|
You see i read an interview with FACT (The people who deal with torrenting.) and in that interview they said they work to stop people who distribute it, and not those who view it, and many of those who send copyright claims decide to instead support sites like Netflix, which is legal. No one has ever been charged in the UK for viewing/streaming.

It’s perfectly legal to stream TV shows and movies if you’re in the UK. This quote from an article on the Daily Mirror website sums it up “If you were to download an illegally copied file that would constitute copyright infringement. However, when you stream something online, the file is stored only temporarily on your computer - and temporary copies are exempt from copyright laws.” According to aTelegraph article no has ever been fined or even prosecuted for streaming movies or TV shows. If you’re downloading stuff then that’s illegal but the chances of you getting in trouble for it are really slim, it’s almost unheard of and it’s ridiculously hard to prove that a specific person downloaded something

Thanks for the replies/advice everyone. I think I will, the UK seems to be pretty chill on this topic.

Not really looked into it but always thought/had in my head that streaming was allowed as long as the streaming being shown to viewers is abit behind(So not exactly live) Although when watching few streams alot do get taken down but that comes under conditions of the sites they are using to stream it for others.
Eitherway I hardly think you'd get caught or done for this.. Many have chipped sky/****** media/kodi like boxes in UK that all are doing the same sort of thing. If not in London then you'll be fine aha |
Yes, it is illegal. Chances being caught aren't big but I still wouldn't do it - can be expensive with a little bit of bad luck. i.e. Disney is having a team who's only focused on trying to get those people.
If I were you, I would stream it over YT/websites and not an app because that's not illegal usually (as stated above). |
As vendetta stated, I think it's legal as long as it doesn't seed (which is illegal in the US, not sure about the UK)
|
in America, someone was fined millions of dollars for illegally downloading music for personal use. I mean, yes it's illegal (to my knowledge the same rules would apply in the UK) but the odds of being caught are extremely slim because they usually don't even care about you. They want the big fish and streaming is better than downloading, but it's still using an illegal service to steal copyrighted material for personal consumption. Thousands of people watch shows/movies illegally, though, so I wouldn't be too worried about anything.
|
I'm truly sorry you live in the UK
|
It's legal to watch movies/tv shows from any browser in the uk. However, from what I know, it's illegal to download apps that allows you to stream tv shows. If you get caught, they'll charge you for breaking the law. I'm not so sure if what you're doing is illegal but, from what I know download free apps to stream tv shows is illegal.

Network providers who deal with all this already realise so many people do it, they give i think between 2-6 warnings before taking action, even then they dont fine you. They will slow down your internet, or block it completely. |
