The Brazilian Problem
 

I don't think anyone realizes exactly how many Brazilian people we have playing this game. Today i took a trip the Balamb Island, where all new players start their journey. What did i discover? Literally 50-100 people standing around outside of the main starting building all speaking Portuguese (official language of Brazil).


They have created an enclave on Balamb Island and on the strip of land leading to the boat that takes you to Balamb Island.


Why this is a problem:

This is problematic for new players. If we continue to allow a specific group of people who do not speak english to loiter at the very first place a new player sees when they download the game, they will be turned off and more than likely say "oh this is just another foreign MMO where nobody speaks english".


I challenge you all to take a stroll down by the boat that takes you to Balamb, and check out the type of people you see loiter around there. Check their profiles. All Brazilian. Dozens of them. Take a trip to Balamb and relive your noob days. Easily 50-100 Brazilians everywhere from the boat you get off of, past the docks, and into the village. Brazilians. Sure you might find another south or central american country there. Maybe El Salvador, Colombia, or Argentina.

This is significantly worse than the enclave of French people who congregate to the right of Azraels Night Club. This is also worse than the Arabs who congregate to the right of the Jesus Freaks. Those people aren't a problem because they arent the first thing a new player sees. The first few moments a new player has in a game determine if he or she will continue playing, or uninstall 5 seconds later.


I do not have a solution to give to you all. Maybe you can brainstorm solutions here. There is no need to say im racist or that i have it out for a specific group of people. This is not true. I just simply see a phenomenon that could negatively impact the game.

Well I mean the tutorial is in English so I'm pretty sure new players wouldn't confuse this as a foreign MMO game.

eh thats not the strongest argument. in fact youre not even arguing against my main point.

you can easily search the app store for a game designed for people globally but end up finding a game infested with one type of people. this is very common.

Either way there's really no way to prevent this. We can't ban players and having admins repeatedly move them away from the place is pointless. If you really want to do something, then spam English sentences there.

or maybe since it appears we're reaching the 4,000 mark (im not sure if we've hit it before or not) maybe its time to implement servers for different parts of the world? Or impose a rule that says you cant return to Balamb Island if you have over 100 hours or something? I see Brazilians with 2000+ hours hanging out at Balamb just because """thats the Brazilian place to be"""

Balamb island and below graal city ship have been Brazilian territories for the past 2 years now, also when you see a noob exploring parts of the game it's like nine times more likely to be a Brazilian lol, it's not only Brazilians though many other players from other South American countries are also growing quite a bit as well.

They're invading the spar arena and the tower guilds atm.

Most Brazilian players are very aggressive. Too aggressive. In fact, they are SO aggressive, that the only words they can utter when you beat them at something is "noob".

This isn't just happening to classic you should see ol west now theres almost as much portugese people as english. A estimate imo would be like this.

45% english
38% portugese
5% german
10% espanol
2% others

And the portugese took over start and a area in front of the trade tables there.

I feel scared for my wellbeing when a Brazilian PMs me and the only english words are insults

its like they have no sense of branching out. they want to play the game with their cultural central hub being exactly where they started

You could go to every base on there all english but if you go to start u see the brazillians. Hell even the roleplaying hipsters got pushed into bottem right courner of the ol west start. Havnt been on classic lately imma go look now :D

I think Graal is one of the few MMOs I've played that doesn't have regional servers (not really surprised tho because the servers already gargle ass).

But if it did I think there wouldn't be such a big problem.

lol when i found classic it was like #150 on the roleplaying category for me. Well that explains the rapid Brazilian population boost then.

Make different lobbies, Brazils get in a brazil lobby, arabs in an arab lobby etc, only for the start / at balamb tho

There's an influx of Brazilians lately because Graal's Flash client is hosted on one of the most popular Brazilian Flash game sites, or at least that's what a friend said, haven't really looked into it myself

Haha wow I'm glad I'm not the only one who's noticed the influx of teh Brazilians. Yes, balamb island is overflowing with them, as well as under the bridge, parts of Graal memorial, and even recently, all over the front of Taylor Richards.

Since I am able to speak Spanish, I've actually made friends with some of them and a lot of them are actually pretty funny and interesting.
That being said, I've discovered some things about them, and most other Latino players, that I found interesting.
First, I feel this game to them may be like a new fad. It's just a "cool" game to them where they can chat with friends, customize their character, etc, basically just like us. It's part of graals overall magic where anyone can be whatever they want.
Another thing is, a lot of them have no clue how to even play the game at times! For example, I've met long time Latino players who have never even completed the main quests simply because they can't read English LOL. So what this tells me is that many Brazilians and latinos sort of just wander through and play whatever tidbits they can.

I feel eventually they'll just move on to something else. Why play a game that you can barely even read?

Posing a solution - hide other players in the areas where this may be an issue, or up until a player finishes the tutorial.

Not gonna lie or twist it, the Brazilians and Filipinos flocking to this game with high speed 5mb/s internet is insane.

Most of them aren't even doing anything, they just stand there with "codeshop lmao".

Are they allowed to embed it though? I can't seem to find any rules on it.

Every day I play west it's almost an 100% chance of getting a pm just saying 'Oi', and it's always the Brazilian players lol

^This, I don't think there has been big increase of them coming to play, they've already been around, ever since Ol' released alot of them have been there(idk if that's coming from classic and vise versa)

I remember a thread on if graal made servers from set places not sure how many was playing at that time but I don't see that happening-although it'd make better imo. Middle eastern are worst for delay/lag, brazilians arn't that bad.

The Brazillian problem? I guess summer is around the corner and it's time to wax again :o

I dont mind that theyre here. Theyre people too. But its just so many of them in a concentrated area that the area they infest becomes foreign. That becomes the Brazilian ghetto of Graal. The problem is that this Brazilian ghetto also happens to be where every single new player starts the game

exactly, they arent participating in anything. only a select few spar. only a select few tower. the rest idle and try to get rich from codeshops.
