GFX: State Contest 2017
 

Hello!

In tribute of the state shop revamp, we'll be having a new state submission contest! This contest will be similar to Azrael's state contest back in 2011. Just like that contest, please read the rules of the contest before submitting anything.

• All state submissions will be here at Graalians.com.
• Do not PM me your submissions. Submit your states in this thread below!
• Posts below in this thread will be contest comments, questions and/or submissions. Posts not pertaining directly to this contest will be removed.
• Submissions must be entirely completed pieces utilizing the state template attached to this post, and must be uploaded with forum options. Foreign links or websites will not be considered as a contest submission.
• You may only submit a total of one state submission for this contest; multiple submissions will not be allowed.
• GRAAL CLASSIC IPHONE STAFF MEMBERS MAY NOT PARTICIPATE IN THIS CONTEST.
• State recolors are not accepted. Multiple submissions of the same state, recolored, are not accepted.
• You may make animated states. However if you do, try not to make them too distracting and refrain from making the file size too large or having anything that flashes rapidly.
• This is a one-person contest. You may not work with anyone else.
• You may edit or completely change your state submission up until the deadline for the contest. The most recent state submission you post will be treated as your final submission.
• You may discuss submissions and offer constructive criticism to one another.
• You must have a valid, e-mail account attached to your Graal Account or you will not receive a prize should you win. Winning contestants will be contacted via Graalians.com with a request for the email account associated with their Graal account. If you do not respond to that message within approximately 1 (one) week of receiving the message, you will forfeit your prize.

Please do not attempt to create multiple accounts to submit states. We can track and figure out who's submitting multiple submissions. States will be reviewed by the graphics team and myself and will be judged based on creativity and graphics quality. In case questions arise in regards to this contest, this post may be edited to display the most up-to-date information in regards to this contest.

Thankfully you won't be needing to make all of that stuff. The only thing you need to make are the large hearts, the small hearts (which are just a smaller version of the large hearts), and the PM variations. I'll attach the template for the parts of the state you will be required to make to this post as well as posting it below:

Be sure there's a clear distinction between full heart and half heart. Players need to be able to tell at a glance!

The PM variations are as follows:
White: Misc Messages (friend requests, guild invites, etc.)
Blue: Mass Massages (we think are unused, but you should make them anyway)
Green: Guild Messages (messages sent between guild members of the guild tag you are currently on)
Yellow: Personal Messages ("PMs" sent privately through your profile)
Red: Admin Messages (broadcast messages, announcements, etc.)

FAQ
Q: "Will the old contest states be replaced?"
A: No. The old contest states will still be available for purchase in the back of the contest room of the state shop (top right room).

Q: "Will we get the trophies pictured in the original post of this thread?"
A: Not in the game, but I'll put them next to the names of the winners of the contest when I announce them in this thread so you feel extra special.

Q: "What if two different people submit similar states?"
A: If they're that closely similar, then I would probably consider the one that was submitted first as the official entry.

Q: "Will the first place winner get state recolors as well?"
A: Yes. First place winner will get all of the states that exist.

Q: "Can I fill out the other areas of the state template?"
A: If you really want to, sure! Though the other areas of the state aren't used on Classic as of now, so making them would be a little pointless in my opinion.

Q: "Where are the smaller icons displayed?"
A: The small hearts are used for when you have more than 3 hearts (which no one has) and for the icon that displays in your customization menu for you status.

Q: "Can I make characters/things that exist outside of the game?"
A: The same rules that apply to custom uploads (as well as everything else on Graal) should apply to states. Please refrain from making anything that could be considered copyright.

Q: "Can I have translucency in my submission?"
A: Yes.

Well if you work with someone else, only one can receive the prize if you win. Soooo...guess it's just better to avoid conflict by not working with someone else.

The old ones will stay in the shop or will they be removed? I'm still proud of my ****ty submission from the first contest so I don't want it to be removed

Yes the old contest submissions will remain in the shop (they're actually all there now at the top of the room, where they'll stay)

Exactly what I was thinking. Cause the one I made is an idea that I think a whole lot of people thought of alredy

Love it! Was just thinking though, might be cute if you added a simple animation to the flame and then took the flame away from the half health candle. Also it would be neat to put some candle wax on the holder for the half health candle and even further you could make the half health candle lower. This way it will be more distinguishable from the normal candle :)

I should also mention that it's extremely important to have a clear distinction between the full heart and half heart so players are able to see what they're health is at at a glance. I also added this information in the original post.

Yep, can't get confused on that. If someone's in a spar or GS, it's especially important to be able to check their health at a moment's notice without having to pay close attention.

I was thinking it would be cool to make a bomb and the half heart would be when it flashes except it one only be one frame not a gif. wouldnt know what to do for the pms though.

and I don't do gfx so I would never be able to do it.

For First Place, does the winner get all the recolors of the states as well? Curious since I noticed some came in multiple colors.

You need more definition between 'full heart' and 'half heart' but cupcakes... nice idea ;)

Question regarding the 'required state' details. If we wanted to make fill in the other areas would that be acceptable and/or used in game? For instance if you wanted to alter the numbers, would the in-game HUD numbers be used or is that information drawn from another source by default?

(Or is it allowed in the contest?)
