Day-Night system coming soon?

A while back Rufus brought up the concept of adding a day-night system, plus we have had some teasers for it's implementation. But Dusty I believe brought up the problem of properly simulating darkness. That problem, as indicated by the railroads, is now no longer something in the way. The lantern properly illuminates the dark caves of the railroad system, meaning that we might be getting night-time very soon!

Pls don't give me false hope :(

Areo 02-02-2016 11:10 PM

Wait, we've been able to make things darker for quite awhile now(see deadwood). So, won't think it's ever any closer unless they actually say so.

It's not really about the darkness but how dynamic said darkness is.

Would it really change anything?

Night-day transition would be pointless if there aren't special events that go on during both parts of the day.

Immersion, it's all about the immersion. Besides, it gives future developers more to work with in terms of what paths they can take in their designs. Please don't say it's pointless because it's not, you're just looking at everything from a very fixed perspective.

Well so far it seems that at night there are areas only accessible during that time of day and graal city would be a pk area from what I can tell so far.

metal 02-03-2016 01:49 AM

Even if a day-night cycle doesnt have special events, I would still find it pretty nice.

This. What's the point if there is no functionality.

Special events would be cool, like maybe different npcs come out at night or something like hide and seek in the dark.

However, even without special events, I think it'd be fun to just run around in the dark with a lantern lol (sorry I know a ton of people have replied to this already)

I second this. Have some functionality to it all.

Areo 02-03-2016 06:50 AM

Would this follow an actual clock or would it go rapidly such as the time in say, minecraft?

You could also have bugs come out at certain times, bug(get it) that would greatly disadvantage certain regions on a real time.

I would also really like some morning and evening light settings. Like the orange glow of the evening would really just appeal to me. And the shadows of the morning, pretty fun.

You could also have certain shops open at different times.

At night you could have baddies roaming the map(though that would probably cause a lot of lag, with all the excess spawning.)

Not to say any of these are good ideas, was just trying to list some things that you possibly could do. Not all the ideas apply to both day-night cycles(as in minecraft variation or actual variation.

Sir 02-03-2016 07:36 AM

I would love a night cycle, only if what types of bugs came out/ left alternated, same thing with baddies. Something else that would make this worth implementing would be at night baddies could enter non-pk areas and attack players. Or even just all non-pk areas are switched to pk.

Or even something such as certain shops/ buildings open exclusively at night, and more loot buyers could come out of the wood work or become available to trade with.

Déjà vu

Chelterrar 02-03-2016 10:47 AM

Delteria has a night and day cycle, and I enjoy it alot. It works with things like lamps which are only turned on at night, etc. Makes the game feel more alive ^_^

KristenGW 02-03-2016 03:12 PM

Question: would the day/night system be on the same schedule for everyone, or would it depend on where you are in the world? Like would people on the other side of the world be experiencing night when you're experiencing day??

I think it would have to be set so day and night cycles are on the same schedule for everyone. The whole cycle would have to only take about two hours maybe an hour to give everyone the same amount of opportunities to experience the specific cycle events.

Longer than an hour, I would presume. I was honestly imaging a 4 hour cycle, with one hour for each period of the day. You could even make it longer, with an 8 hour cycle. I think that two hours would be too short, and would make certain activities difficult, like hunting bugs that only appear at certain times(if that was implemented)

First let's put a weather system

Yes, but then it's a fine balance as to how long a day cycle spans for as you don't want to punish people for playing in certain time zones. What would you say to be the ideal time period for a cycle?

Like a storm cell, we get one good thunder storm and then we trash the system because we realize it's too much work

of course it would not be accurate, I would say a half an hour would be reasonable. Also, would make use of random buildings around the overworld @ night because they could remain non-pk and people could weather the storm, or run house to house. Could be fun.

No it doesn't. It's annoying af to be running around in darkness. Good thing they added a disable option.

i agree with the people that say a day/night system with no purpose is pointless.

Why not make it so that when the PK boards a reset ever morning/night that's when a new day begins with a rising sun and it gets brighter throughout the day, and then it becomes a sunset and then night lol

Well if there are features added for each time frame, then I doubt that will be an option.

Then again, I guess you could just opt out of participating in those time frame exclusive events.
E.g. night= Total map PK, certain vendors come out, certain fish come out (is fishing a thing yet in this game?)

A day/night system would be a good idea.

A possible way to do it is like majoras mask, where one hour is 60 seconds.
