School Motivation

So basically I get home and can't be bothered to do my homework. I want to but I get bored and lose focus so easily.
Any advice to get motivated to do work?

Vicipower 11-04-2015 09:15 PM

set future Goals

i just realized ihavent finished my homework yet fk byeyeye

Zara 11-04-2015 09:16 PM

Well... I like to turn my internet off and remove phone/laptop-anything that could easily distract me.This kinda makes me want to work its hard, but at least I can get work done.

Eugeen 11-04-2015 09:34 PM

Well it depends... Do you get good grades? Does your homework actually count towards grades that much or would you be able to get away with not doing it?
I went through highschool without ever making homework except for special projects yet still having good grades on my exam, not saying it's smart but it's possible with the right situations.

Right now I'm in college and homework is a bit annoying but since I'm now learning what I want to learn it's not that bad and I don't have trouble making it.

Highscool homework will always be boring and stupid yet you have to do it either way to get rid of it. Music tends to help me focus though so that might help you too

imSupah 11-04-2015 09:54 PM

As Bubble said, I listen to music when I'm doing my college hw. It helps me stay focused. I just don't put the volume too high as I get distracted if I do that. I also take breaks from time to time. I can't do all my HW in one sitting so I often take a 30-min break doing whatever.

Fulgore 11-04-2015 10:05 PM

If there's anything you want to do in the future put that on your mind.

Tell yourself "I won't make it to x if I don't get good grades now."

Albie 11-04-2015 10:12 PM

Thanks everyone and yes I usually try my best to get good grades but a lazy phase has come over me. I've got a scholarship to quite a nice school and I really don't want to lose it.

Buffalo 11-04-2015 10:53 PM

the laziness is normal. BUT DON'T LOSE THAT SCHOLARSHIP

Clown 11-04-2015 11:08 PM

I've grown a mentality that I just simply can't play games or watch TV unless ive finished doing housework - then I can chill and not worry about it

SouthernZombie* 11-04-2015 11:11 PM

Everything you get bored doing homework just imagine getting that scholarship taken away lmao.

Arsenal 11-04-2015 11:43 PM

Well, first off, you should set a desired time for homework. Maybe right after you come home from school? I cook up a little meal and do my hw right when I come home from school. If it helps,c you can maybe afk in a game while doing hw. And besides, think about your future. You do better in the subject or w/e and maybe have a good job with good pay. Believe me, I fkin h8 hw man. Like, when I get home from school, it's the one time in the day where I can get away from school and hw just makes me feel like I'm back in school. But develop the hw habits right now. Trust me, it will benefit you.

Skyzer 11-05-2015 03:31 AM

Mmm. I dropped out of highschool.

MrSimons 11-05-2015 04:09 AM

Don't go home till you finish your homework.

^^ 100% agree.
if u have free period, do it. or stay at a classroom and do it.
hws done ez.

CM 11-05-2015 04:15 AM

Some people like to listen to music when they do work or study, for me I get too distracted by that.

But yeah basically what Simons said, I used to always try and do my homework at school whenever I could find a free period.

Also I never really had trouble understanding and doing homework so most of the time I would procrastinate, definitely not a good thing to do but if you can handle it then I guess it's not a horrible thing to do. But again I would not recommend it.

Shmegg 11-05-2015 04:27 AM

this isn't really motivation but instead of going to the cafeteria for lunch, I go to the library to finish some homework

Nobody recommends procrastinating but we basically all do it at some point xD

Studying with a couple of friends always got me more motivated. Then you can discuss the interesting readings you (probably) have. Try to find a couple of friends that are also struggling with their motivation, or is sick of the stress of procrastinating, and ask them if they would be interested in coming together after school to do homework. Remember to take good breaks and always keep a bottle of water nearby - it boosts my concentration, so that I can focus over a longer span.

My best friend and I always did our homework together in High School, and I know for sure that I wouldn't have gotten the grades I did without his help and company, and we both had way more fun studying together than we would have had if we studied alone. We also boosted each others confidence in the subject where we didn't do so well in, and if one of us was struggling with understanding something major in the readings, we would help each other out to try and figure it out together.

The hardest part of what you have said is it is hard to find "True Friends, Best Friends and Siblings who will understand".

That's true, and it does take a lot of time and effort to find those people, but when you do it'll all be worth it.

Sardon 11-06-2015 12:22 AM

depends on how you work

I tried balancing myself by turning on a nes and playing for a certain amount of time then doing work for that same amount of time.
It might work for you but I ended up playing the legend of zelda all night and failing an assignment LOL

My checklist for eliminating procrastination/getting motivation:

1a. (optional) Clean your room. I can't stand working (or being) in a messy room, and find it really pulls down my level of productivity.

1b. (COMPULSORY) Download Self Control (Mac) or Cold Turkey (PC). Regardless if your problem is FaceBook, GraalOnline, Graalians, Twitter, these will block websites for however long you choose.

1c. Play a game. An actual game, ie not graal ie Call of Duty, Just Dance, Animal Crossing. But don't do it in your study space. Your study space is for studying. Do this for ~10 minutes, but no longer than 25 or you'll get too absorbed. Forget about your school work

2. Go for a walk. Outside. Along the streets. More than 5 minutes. I walk for 5-20 minutes, depending on how I feel. Bring music, or just listen to the birds, but don't bring study podcasts or anything of the sort.

3. Have a shower. A short one though, preferably as cold as possible without freezing. Get dressed in study clothes, clothes that you use to study. Not pyjamas, not sports gear (I'm guilty of this).

4. Set your SelfControl or Cold Turkey timer and websites.

5. Say, "**** yeah, I can do this"

6. Do whatever made you do this list.

This is all about detaching yourself from your study environment and reconnecting in a way that should define the lines between your study mode and relaxing mode.

Bonus: Music to listen to:
Try classical or ambient beat music. I like lounge music like this.
Don't listen to music with words.

The RS grind has made me come to really appreciate the xp gains life, I see homework as being experience gains towards reaching 99/99 science, after that I am free to login to RS and bury all my money away and thus my whole day is filled with XP gains and I am quite happy.

If I skip the science skilling I feel guilty and won't play RS until I do it.

Sycamore 11-06-2015 12:27 PM

Imagine cleaning toilets or working at another dead end job, because you didn't aspire for greatness. Don't want that? Get to work.

TD* 11-06-2015 09:38 PM

Vicipower is correct; you need to set yourself long term goals. Goals that a much more ambitious than finishing the year by putting the least amount of effort possible. Figure out what you want to do with your degree and work towards it. A degree is not an end goal but the means to an end.

It's difficult to put motivation in school if you don't vision how it will advantage you in life. Think about where you want to be in 10, 20 or even 30 years. Now think about how you plan on getting there, what diplomas you will need, who you will have to impress. No ambition is too small if you put in the hard work. You will find it much easier to do your homework with such goals.

imagine if we lived in a society where everyone aspired for greatness and actually accomplished it, we would live in a world of toilets filled with poop.

OP: We need more toilet cleaners, so If you become a toilet cleaner I will appreciate it.

Just do your friggin homework. Good grades leads to good college which makes finding a job out door super easy.

Crono 11-07-2015 03:53 PM

if you post on graal forums looking for motivation then reading a comment online probably isn't gonna change your work ethics. i procrastinated a lot and had no motivation, i can tell you that no post/site/piece of advice really changed anything for me. in the end i just had to buckle down and get **** done. hell, this post won't even help you.

good luck

There is no guarantee.

There are a lot of people with college degrees either not finding work, or not getting paid enough due to "insufficient" experience.
