IMPORTANT POLL!

I'm just curious about something, so that's why I made the poll.

Note: I would appreciate it if members of the graphics community don't critic the art work(or else it will defeat the purpose of my poll)

Picture B just looks like the unfinished version.

Nope, B has a different light source and stylism for it's details.

Well i don't know to much about graphics as you do so i suppose you're correct.

There's bits of pieces from both that I like but alone they both look funny.

kenthefruit 08-03-2015 12:23 AM

I know A is Pillowshaded, but there's certain things in A I like (Princess, Ladder, Grass (not the platform the princess is on), Dragon).

I know B is correctly shaded, but they definitely did a ****tier job in almost everything. The tree looks way worse, where's the leaves? The dragon doesn't even have its scales anymore, they used way too much contrast between shades, so on and so forth.

I'm assuming this was supposed to be a respresentation that pillow shading can look better than actual light sources at times. But in all actuality, they purposely limited the details in B to prove that point. If they had included such details that they did in A (tree leaves, grass details, dragon scales), it'd look better than A.

Tbh I like A more, but only because I'm sure whoever made this wants me to like A more. If B had been finished (or even looked remotely finished) I know it'd look a lot better.

I voted A and I agree with this. The artist didn't accomodate for a lot of A's details while readjusting the light source.

Sure, pillow shading looks great when its stylized. I can see how an animation of A would be gorgeous. But in general, realistic lighting is much more practical.

Both look pretty good to me.

The textures are completely different so it's really a matter of personal preference.

If it was an example of how pillowshading can look better than using proper lighting than it is a BS example for obvious reasons.

MOOOOM I WAS CONTRIBUTING TO A DISCUSSION

GOAT 08-03-2015 11:18 PM

Thanks everyone for voting, but due to some errors I did with this thread I wasn't able to get accurate results for what I was looking for.

Errors:
Project A was the original piece

Project B was an edited version done by a different person (problem was that it was a rushed job that was not polished-which he mentions, but I didn't catch it)

Even with a rushed Project B I could have adjusted by adding a 4th option to the poll to dislike both projects(having no choice but to pick from possibly 2 bad pieces doesn't give me an accurate answer to what I was looking for)

Yes Psymon, I'm on a mission to convince the art community that pillow shading is greater than all other shading styles.

I just wanted to see if regular players would like a pillow shaded piece. Artists already have it in their head that pillow shading is bad, so anything they see with pillow shading is automatically ugly and that's why I asked them not to critic it (didn't want them to influence the voting)

I like things from both works, so don't think it was a shading vs shading thing.

I think every reasonable artist would agree the first is better whether or not its pillowshaded. Its not that something can't look good pillowshaded, its that it would look better if it wasn't.

Latte 08-04-2015 08:07 AM

Like most things with art, it's not so much about the technique, but how you pull it off. The artist of A has so carefully shaded their piece, that it shows they'd possibly be capable of rearranging it in a more natural light-- clearly showing that it was intentional, and not the attempt of an amatuer.

I actually made A; thank you.

Mio 08-05-2015 11:59 AM

A looks more finished; but not having a lightsource, While B has correct shading.
Note: This pixel art is just an example of Pillowshading again, I saw it on PixelJoint.

I don't think A was entirely pillow shaded. The light source seems to be coming from the front, top, right. There's a clear angle from all the scales on the dragon, the helmet on the warrior guy, the shadows on the dragon and cliffs, etc. I tried my best to point most of that out in here. The pillow shading on the cliff looks bad but the trees and grass work well, not trying to get too into critiquing this because I know that wasn't the point.

It's a really pretty piece of work, nice colors, good contrast, cute characters, pleasing to the eye. Don't know why people wouldn't like it.

Yeah, if you do this again try asking someone to make something in two ways and finish it both ways. I think that may have swayed the results quite a bit because the second one clearly wasn't finished as many have pointed out.
