Is the word "damn" considered a swear?

I want to see honest opinions of why you believe it would be considered a curse word. Especially if used in a work environment, online gaming, or just other situations that may occur.

Seņor Albonio 05-17-2015 03:54 PM

Damn son, that's one hell of a question.

5hift 05-17-2015 03:56 PM

I'd say so.

It's not really the kind of thing you'd want to say around small children but considering the amount of influence of people who use the word, I'd say its becoming less foul as it used to be.

Vicipower 05-17-2015 04:13 PM

And that GP was seriously gonna reset my Status bcuz I had damn in it, damn

No discussions about the GP, I'm referring to in general, would it be bad to use? Like if I said, "Damn, I'm so low on cash".

MattKan 05-17-2015 04:23 PM

I mean that's kinda the definition of swear.

Common Sense 05-17-2015 04:28 PM

If it's a word you wouldn't use around a mother and her 5-year old child, then it probably is a swear word.

Asaiki 05-17-2015 04:30 PM

I say it around my mom so it isnt.
Gordon Ramsay says it on television without being censored.

Zetectic 05-17-2015 04:32 PM

If you mean it, then yes.
but for me nah. i say goddamnit all the time.

Tyler 05-17-2015 05:03 PM

In front of children yes, but generally no.

Crono 05-17-2015 05:18 PM

MrSimons 05-17-2015 05:40 PM

If a word is good enough for sailors, its good enough for you.

Talon 05-17-2015 06:38 PM

If you wouldn't use it around 10-year-olds, it's a swear word.

That being said, I tell most 10-year-olds that theyre ****ing ****head ******* anyway, so.

/s

Blu 05-17-2015 06:43 PM

I'd say it around anyone.
It's not bad at all.

GOAT 05-17-2015 07:43 PM

I don't consider it a bad word, but if used in a certain way it might be seen in a negative way.

Example:
Person A: My wife had an affair and the guy she slept with was HIV +.
Person B: Damn

Person A: STFU noob and go back to balamb.
Adiman: That's not nice, so here's a warning for you.
Person A: These damn adimans or I hate these damn adimans or any variation similar to those.

I don't understand why trying to censor words from people teaches anyone anything. What does a child learn from being told that they shouldn't say the word damn. They get told they shouldn't say it because it's bad......uh why why why why.

The real problem in my eyes are parents having shiii grammar and spreading it to there kid. Parents from my generation who say *** as a verb, noun, adjective. Yeah then saying swear words isn't productive. I never condone cuss words, I just want people to open up there vocab.

words that promote phobic behavior and thoughts, Like homophobic, trans phobic racist, body and sex shaming stuff. Now that's what I consider a swear but not stuff like damn f**k shiiii.

Using all words in moderation compels people to learn new words.

I looked it up online and read that 78% of people think damn is a bad word, 80% of those people were males.

Well, it has been twisted into "lookin' fine", however yea, it's a bad word. Why? Because it is used "to declare (something) to be bad, unfit, invalid, or illegal."

For example: to damn someone to hell, god damn you

Your going to hurt yourself and others with your ignorance one day.

I've never given you the space to be a troll, in my mind. Your completely serious all the time.

Platinum 05-18-2015 12:09 PM

I'd say it's more informal/way-you-would-talk-to-your-friends than a swear word.
More bogan but not necessarily bogan. sort of like the word Bae.

Giving me rep and then putting the reason as "-rep" does not cause me to lose rep, lol.

Multipas* 05-19-2015 12:39 AM

Yes it does

I haven't watched it since I was like 13, but when WWE changed to its current kids-friendly programming it became incredibly watered down. The word "damn" is still used as one of the wrestlers main gimmicks:

So if it is good enough for the pre-watershed WWE, I don't consider it a swear word.

Sarzar 05-19-2015 01:13 AM

with modern language, i dont think its a swear word, but if a teacher said it in secondary school, would you look at them twice?

calista 05-19-2015 04:55 PM

my friend used that word in his status and got pmed by an admin hahahah saying that he should remove that word or the admin will reset it.

Skill 05-19-2015 06:24 PM

I wouldn't use it in a work environment or around kids, but I'll use it casually in online gaming.

MBK 05-20-2015 10:48 AM

Considering Austin Koga has a full paragraph of utter and vulgarness in his status and his status didn't get reset....no admins shouldn't reset status with DAMN iN It.

I'd use it once in fron of a child 4 or older., to look cool. U
Workplace Spew it, I imagine like McDonald's or something? your dam xheesebuger is rddy. Order up, damn your day. Gg

pacman 05-29-2015 07:23 PM

I don't believe in bad words only bad ideas. It's weird that a lot of words that are considered bad today, actually weren't bad a long time ago. Examples:

F*g, it use to mean cigarette.
B*tch, - female dog
P*ssy - It meant cat, and I think old disney movies said it. Lady and the tramp cartoon mentions it I think.
D*ck - Another name for Richard.
N**ger - It actually derives from the latin word Negru, meaning black. But I think because it was used during slavery the word became "bad"

Words are only bad because you believe them to be bad. If you are a Christian there is nothing in the Bible that says saying certain words is a sin.

Would you rather a child say

I'm going to F-n church

or

My dear friend, please pass the crack pipe.

Which is worse?

_Dellik_ 05-29-2015 09:33 PM

I sometimes use words like damn on graal with guild members and friends, but I refrain from using any profain language in person. Maybe because I have no friends irl and have to be formal with everyone ._.

Meh, generally speaking I don't use "bad" words. Mainly because I try to be more creative with my choice of vocabulary. Most females don't like guys that cuss, or maybe it's I don't like girls that like guys who like girls who cuss..

Asaiki 05-29-2015 09:40 PM

Damn Girl you nasty, Your dumber than my damn old ex.

That's informal/vulgare use of that.

Damn I lost.
Still a bit informal but usable in public.
