Taking Forever to Move/Delete Files

Why does my computer take so long to move/delete files? I have a 15 MB file that it's taken about ten minutes to move from my downloads file to the desktop. This is the norm and always happens when I try to move files--it's even worse when I delete stuff, and then when I get sick of waiting for it and I hit cancel it just says "cancelling" for another several minutes before going away.

In addition to taking a long time to actually move the files, it also takes a long time to actually start doing anything. (E.g., the file I started moving 10 minutes ago... right now it says it's going at 0/bps.) I think something is halting the process at its beginning which is the majority of the wait time.

I'm running Windows 7 64. I can post any other specs that are necessary, but it is a Dell XPS 8300 from about 2011 with sufficient specs that this shouldn't be happening (12 GB RAM, i7 processor, etc. etc.) I also have over half of my 1 TB of disk space unused. This has been going on for probably close to 2 years, only getting worse as time goes on.

Try running a defrag on your computer. Might be because your computer is old and takes a long time to find the files. A defrag should fix.

10minutes for 15MB? Did you use magnets on your PC?(no dont do that)

Distorted 04-01-2015 07:26 PM

It takes me 10 minutes to download a gb game :0

Maybe removing start ups help. In my opnion your hard disk is damaged or you have to many tasks running.

Try doing a disk cleanup, alongside defragging your computer.
Leave it on over night, since it'll sound like it will take quite a while with your issue.

HDD is probably failing, try to backup what you can.

Don't disk cleanup / defrag as that could kill your drive quicker.

Look at the Event Viewer in your System logs for disk errors:

Have you seen a blue screen? Data disappearing(or corrupted/missing scripts)? Strange sounds coming out of the PC?

Those are useful tips.

If you dont understand anything from the site that fp4 sent, you can do the error-checking here. Remember to backup first

Have you tried rearranging the electrolytes? You'll need a conductive liquid, salt water will do fine. You'll need to pour the liquid into the small hole that is covered by a sticker. This will act as a glue and stabilize the electrolytes on the physical disk.

you can use bleach to clean the computer, just dump it into the computer, should work just fine too.

drink some too.

I don't think that'll work.

But that will just ruin it.
I'm teaching him how to fix his hard drive.

I'd personally move to a new HDD. If it's been going on for two years, it's time for a new one.

Defo sounds like a failing disk like fp4 said. Maybe take this as an opportunity to upgrade to an SSD if you can?

If not then save up, SSD is the best performance upgrade anyone without an SSD can make for daily computing along with loading stuff (your hard drive does that more often than you think).

SSD's are great. I recommend them if you're planning on switching out HDs.

O well time to get some cash somehow. Maybe I will get a job on a Graal server and sell some staff positions. Thanks for all the advice

Running my OS on a SSD currently. It has been a truly fantastic upgrade, but I can tell you that if you do get one, try to keep it totally clean except maybe for program installations. (And store everything else on high-capacity, high rpm analog drives since the space you pay for is dirt cheap.) Like most drives, even solid states don't deal well with being full. :p

And like others have said, if it has gone on this long you should probably invest in a new one soon and maybe migrate your files there before the drive dies. If it has trouble with reading and writing, that's definitely not a good sign.
