Southern California Native moving...
So I'm headed off to Atlanta, Georgia in July for a year. Work has really located me to there, I'm actually going to be filming a movie there. They have a total of 50+ something movies slated there this next year, while California only has maybe 8 or so. Hollywood is not so much hollywood anymore, very sad really. Tax reasons I know... (California is F^#K'in pricey)
But I'm not complaining. I came here to maybe see if we got any Hotlanta residents around the graal community and what their take is on living out there. I've done some research and I'm actually headed out to visit it this next week. But maybe ya'll got some takes on the Southern state! -Girls to Guys ratio -Restaurants -Nightlife -Shopping -Lakes (wakeboarding) -Anything to do that's active really... Thanks! |
Disneyland!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No not really Disneyland is hell |
I live just a few hours from Atlanta. I visit frequently and must say that it is a pleasure to stay there. The restaurants are outstanding and there are so many awesome places to visit. The only thing that might get to you is the inner-city traffic, that sucks. But overall it's a really nice place to live and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Mangsi can we call you Super M instead?

I'm used to the traffic believe me I live in LA, one thing I'm not used to is the way racial tension works there. Southern Hospitality is awesome, but my father said he was at a bar in Midtown, ATL w/ a friend who happened to be Hispanic and they wouldn't even serve him. They kept asking my dad if his friend wanted drinks ect... pretty much treated like a second class citizen. I'm not racist by any means but that's a trip to me.... guess it's something I'll have to get used to. I'm white so I'll be treated respectfully from what I understand.
But what do you Georgia residents do in your spare time...? For instance here in California and when I went to school in CO there was always something to do. Obviously most water-sports and snow-sports are ruled out cause of no ocean and limited mountain access but... any Rockclimbing, Hiking, Camping, Lakes, ect that are around the area? It almost seems as though the ATL offers a whole lotta drinkin', which I don't mind haha! I might have to start playing Hockey again too, I'm hoping they have ice rinks there. |
I don't live in Atlanta but Georgia is a beautiful place man, you're gonna love it.

What kind of person with a full job still plays this game...?

Well, I'm a high school guy so I can always find something to do. You on the other hand are not. I'm not too sure about water sports but hell, it's Atlanta, you'll find something. I never really see too much racial tension though. Sure it happens occasionally, but where does it not? Also, if you want to talk about shopping. (This is my feminine side speaking) I'd literally go to Atlanta just to shop, they have the nicest mall I've ever been to. A Godiva chocolate store right night to an Apple and Nike store = heaven. I usually take my longboard up to Atlanta, that's a pretty fun and active thing to do. Anyways, there's an endless amount of cool places to visit and you've definitely got a years worth of exploring and excitement ahead of you.

Thanks for the feedback @Nabu, appreciate it.
I head there Sunday morning for two weeks from LAX and land sometime in Atlanta at 3:30 in the afternoon... so I'll see how it goes I guess! Lookin' forward to it really. |

Sentenial park (may have spelled wrong) is a cool place where a lot of events go down.
We have world of coca cola, it attracts many people. A popular resturant down there is known as "The Varsity", since you came from cali I can pretty much break it down easily. It is the In-and-out Burger of Atlanta. Atlanta has music festivals a lot, they are pretty damn good too. Shaky Knees music festivals was just 2 weekends ago, and music midtown happens every year. If you are into EDM and dubstep rave style events, counterpoint is awesome. Also speaking of music festivals there is Bonnaroo 4-day music festival up in Machester, Tennessee, which is not too far from Atlanta. It is damn expensive but also the best experience i've ever had. Its the closest thing to woodstock, imo. Atlanta has my favorite shopping center, called "little five points" check it out. Lots of reggae styled things, fun restaurants, local coffee shops, smoke shops, fancy wear shops.. you name it! Cool people go there. Atlanta traffic is heavy, i am sure you have probably noticed that. Be careful on those highways, please. #1 Airport in the US. Since you are a wakeboarder, its good to note georgia has zero state named natural lakes. However, wake boarders are somewhat common. I live an hour north in woodstock, Ga. We have lake Alatoona. I see wakeboarders there all the time. I believe there is a KKK peace walk (yes, thats what i meant to type) held every year in Atlanta. I hear about it a lot when it happends. A popular club is called IRIS, going back into the EDM community. There is also Kingdom Rave held every 2 months, that is fun. Georgia has fun paintball. You should try playing some time! Also falcons games and braves games slow down the entire city. Either partake in the fun or GTFO and fast. I can't really help you on the male:girl ratio. It just depends what specific area you are in. I go to highschool still, id say more girls in my school by far. It's not like that everywhere though. There are ALOT of blacks in ATL though haha Quote:
Longboarding is progressively entering popularity however is farther behind those of northern and western states. Quote:
Nah jk lol Georgia is beautiful. Be sure to visit state parks!!!! The city itself kinda grosses me out after awhile, but so do all other cities. I know i'm not the only one. Quote:

OH YEAH I ALMOST FORGOT: The state police department (or whatever) is on a 2 week campaign against not wearing your seatbelt. They literally are implementing all sorts of things in order to catch as many people as they can. Wear your seatbelt, but if you aren't going to, just pretend like you are very good for the next too weeks. |
Humidity doesn't quite burn, it's just thick and miserable. It's like being in a sauna, and since the air is so wet it can feel much hotter than non-humid air.
You've moved just in time to experience it! |

Anywho... I've been living in Atlanta now for the past 3-2 months. There's something you just never get used to, and that's the humidity. Just finished filming the sequel to Divergent which is a sci-fi book series it's called Insurgent. Now that I got some time, I'm gonna chill and go explore the state a bit more. I've liked it so far and I seem to know ATL like the back of my mind. But now I wanna go check out the countryside! The girls here are hella nice and love the attention, I've been pretty pleased with the selection. Then again, what someone lives in a City and is not attracted to any of the ladies. It's limitless really.
But I do like it and there are definitely some perks and disadvantages of living here. I'll be back in California next winter, soon as I finish up this 10 month film run we start in December. Gonna start shooting the 3rd (Allegiant) and 4th (Four). |
Down south we do have the lookers, come check it out.
Btw have you seen the international airport yet? That is one crazy sight to see |
Yeah I've flown into that airport a couple times now, it's chaotic. Even more-so then LAX...
Anyways I've had some time off and got to check out Savannah, GA. I'm now off to Lake Laneir today for a couple days with some co-workers. Here's a picture of me on top of the Capital Building, we were shooting a couple scenes up there for Ride Along 2. With Ice Cube and Kevin Hart. http://i59.tinypic.com/2wdzvb9.jpg And another picture of me when I successfully joined Local 600 Cinematography Guild about a year ago. (I don't know why the **** I have duck lips) http://i62.tinypic.com/ejy077.jpg |
