new to anime

Hiya so I want to start watching anime but I have no idea what to begin with so any suggestions? Oh and nothing inappropriate.

Hadi 04-17-2014 04:11 AM

The typical Sword art online? You might like it.

Keeluah 04-17-2014 04:38 AM

Yeah Sword Art Online is the most typical starter anime. Especially since you haven't seen enough anime to totally pick out the flaws in the otherwise good series. Attack on Titan is another good anime, but it kinda makes your standard higher up for other series.

The two above is good to get into anime in general, but if you want to try some romance, ToraDora is usually the most popular as a gateway. You will have to get into Romance since it's the most used genre in anime.

Smoke 04-17-2014 04:41 AM

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. I wouldn't say it's inappropriate but there is a female character who wears short shorts and a bikini top as an outfit almost the entire time lol... but other than that the show is friendly and 10/10 would recommend as a starter anime.

Hadi 04-17-2014 04:42 AM

Also Soul Eater is a pretty neat one. It's funny at times and I think you would really like it! Would be an awesome starter anime.

Tyler 04-17-2014 04:38 PM

Black Butler is a good one to start with. You might also like Persona 4 The Animation.

I just started watching toradora and its a pretty good anime to me (but what do I know it could be the crappiest anime of all)

Japanese cartoon fandom is the dumbest load of horse cap I've ever seen. Everybody has their own opinions and flavors for shows but noo if u watch the wrong Anime god forbid ur gonna get flamed for being an idiot cuz u prefer 1 cartoon over whatever the other one likes. Plus it seems that the more popular/ "BETTER" animes are the ones with girls wearing short shorts and unbuttoned shirts and people constantly trip fall and bump into one another and make repetitive noises for like 10 minutes cuz just saying "ugh" and shaking eyes once isn't enough. But no, if u say what I just said then ur gonna get flaming and told that they dont watch hentei which they probably don't but all the "better" animes are the same dam thing without characters actually taking off clothes.
Long story short, Japanese cartoons are trash, font ask for recommendations. Watch whatever you want and like.
Basically all animes the majority seems to like is like mild hentei.

Ps. I don't like anime. Never watched eny. Except pokemon.

Keeluah 04-17-2014 05:30 PM

Not all anime series are about Fan Service. There are quite a bit of Mature (No School girls with panty flash etc.) series like Attack on Titan, Fate Zero, Psycho-Pass and more. You don't have to watch all anime if you can't stand those types of fanservice, just ask some anime fans for some good mature series.

Plus I prefer Anime over Cartoon because most Cartoons are just episodic comedy filled series. Don't get me wrong, I laugh to quite a few of their jokes, but that's basically all that Cartoons have. There are anime that are like that, but there is also anime with a good storyline and amazing characters that just brings you to awe.

Mangsi 04-17-2014 05:33 PM

I only asked for recommendations because I've never watched anime before and I want to know some that graalians watch

Only one I have watched is the final fantasy movie. Apparently any anime fan kid at school thought I was the biggest ****** ever for watching it. And of course they were kind enough, like every other cartoon fanboy, to give me me no reason or evidence what so ever to why it was so bad. I liked it, I fast forwarded the boring parts, it was alright.

Oh no. Anime and Japanese cartoons are the same thing. And if mature means mild hentei then it's even more ******ed. Should be like immature cuz if ud be mature then ur go on red tube or whatever floats ur boat.

Thing that annoys me is when anime fans recommend animes that gives them a rise in their pants and not cuz it actually has anything interesting like plot twists or whatever.

You seem to have got me wrong. A "Mature" Series in the anime world has nothing of the sort close to a mild hentai, there is no half naked scenes and panty and bras showing. The people your asking for anime recommendations have horrible taste, or they are more likely joking to get you to watch some big fanserviced anime.

A good anime too watch is Attack on Titan. No school girls, no one if half naked. An intresting Plot, great plot twist, interesting characters and just incredible action scenes.

If you don't want any anime that's like Mild hentai, just check the genre and make sure it doesn't have Ecchi tagged.

And that is the problem.

Anime has a lot of negative stereotypes, but if you actually watch some quality stuff, then you'll realize that it is far better than the detractors would have you believe.

There is some awful stuff in any media, anime is no exception, but they do not define the medium.

You see people this is why anime at the moment will never crack the western market, too many people think anime is just hentai and tentacles. And besides the fact that the only anime you have watched is pokemon, on what does that give you any crediablity to voice your opinion?

Lol.

Might as well watch Cartoon Network.

But anyways, give Attack on Titan a try.

It's not super gory compared to some other series I've seen. (Hellsing Ultimate, Another, etc.)

Rockson 04-17-2014 08:25 PM

I agree that it gets stereotyped all the time, since for the longest time that's how I viewed anime. After watching SAO I completely changed my mind. Since then I've seen quite a few, and I haven't hate ANY of them, but I can tell you the ones that I'd prefer. Just watching pokemon doesn't give you any basis to judge other Anime on.

Mangsi 04-17-2014 09:32 PM

Gore is fine in fact Gore can make something better but nudity is not what I wish to see in my first anime

Admiral 04-17-2014 09:39 PM

Yeah, I started with SAO and that was so good the post anime depression hit me quite hard afterwards lol, then I moved onto Death Note, also a good starter, and then just started looking for some that peaked my interests.

Definitelydeath note is a must watch. The dub is pretty cool too. Death note has so much plot and the plot keeps coming!

Attack on Titan had good gore, brings alot of feels, but the thing it that the Titans are represented as Giant Naked Human like beast with no genitals, but it's not a big deal since they are OFTEN represented as a scary man eating creature.

John 04-17-2014 11:45 PM

If you want some brand new awesome anime go with what everyone else said (SAO, AoT, Death Note, Black Butler, Soul Eater, Tengen Toppa, etc..) If you want some old school anime then you should go with Yu Yu Hakusho, Inuyasha, Cowboy Bebop, Zatch Bell, Rurouni Kenshin, Big O, FLCL, Yu Gi Oh, Samurai Jack, DBZ, and Shaman King.

Watch Bo Bobo bo too, it's very weird, but it's so funny!

Edit: I recommend you watch the old school anime first before you move on to the newer one because you can watch how they improved in the detail from like the 90s to 2014.

Mangsi 04-18-2014 04:02 AM

Ok what I mean by nudity is I don't want the animes that have naked school girls or stuff like that, attack on titans is fine

Attack on Titan wasn't hardly sad at all. You don't really connect with anyone other than the 3 main characters, so when people die it isn't as big of a deal as seeing some of the characters on Angel Beats pass on.

GOOD GOD NO. Dont listen to the people telling you to watch Sword Art Online as your first anime! These delusional culture-less fools think its a great show even though they admit the second half was utter garbage. Listen to Smoke and watch Gurren Lagann. Good anime that will get anyone hooked.

It was my first anime, and I didn't have a problem with it. I admit that the second arc of SAO wasn't nearly as good as the first arc. It doesn't mean that it was a terrible show altogether!

Mangsi 04-18-2014 05:28 AM

Gurren Lagann isn't that great for a gateway anime, kinda wanna stay away from fanservice anime as a starter. That could be the same for Sword Art Online too I guess, but Sword Art Online was just typically more popular. Plus SAO doesn't even reach my top 10 favorite anime.

Gurren Lagann is not a gateway anime at all.
Spoiler
Gurren Lagann lost it's traction when they did that horrible time skip and put more focus on that terrible character, forgot his name, the kid they found in another underground base. If you think throwing galaxies, making a ultra deluxe super combo wombo, having an enemy that was horribly introduced, not to mention ****ing Nia was somehow an Anti-Spiral. Let's not start down the path of the ****ing Anti Spirals either that make absolutely no ****ing sense. Literally, to enjoy Gurren, you HAVE to not think.

It's literally only above how SAO Season 1 ended simply because it was unique.

Edit; kind of ironic you call the people suggesting SAO as delusional culture-less fools, then suggesting something just as bad in terms of story lmao.

As for the topic on hand, What genres are you interested in? If I could get that, I'll be able to point you in a better direction than the usual hype train animes.

Ehhh. It's action, it's pretty kiddish when it comes to violence.

Mirai Nikki (Future Diary); Possible nudity, I haven't watched in the series in awhile and I marathoned it.
Hamatora
Kill la Kill
Magical Warfare
Broken Blade

Bold are the really violent ones. Mirai Nikki has a bad story however.

Broken Blade is amazeballs. Don't let the episode count fool you, 7 episodes, all an hour long.

I don't see why not. It was probably my 5th or 6th anime I started with. It is kind of lengthy though with like 50 episodes I think. Death Note was mentioned somewhere in here before. I would highly recommend that as well.

Exactly why it makes a good first anime: the intentional over the top action is the perfect hook; you can unplug your brain, because no one wants something too confusing for first anime; and when you watch another anime that has a much deeper story, you realize there are shows that are much better than Gurren Lagann.

But not only did SAO lack a good plot, but the action was sparse and not attention-grabbing. It skipped from level 1 > 20 > 60 > escape game early way before level 100; and no action/boring story in between.

I fk what going in as I haven't read the thread , but anyways I think you should start on somthing with a big fan base as you are more lickely to like it if allot of other people also do before finding a specific type/genre of anime you like. Personally I started by watching all the really popular anime such as Naruto , bleach , sword art online ...etc and then after fully enjoying these anime I went to seek different genres and watched animes like my little monster , sakurasou , and stuff like love anime . After all of that I kinda settled on my 4 fav genres which currently are fantasy , comedy , action and slice of life/love and just and seeked anime with these elements and asked for suggestions by referencing past animes I really enjoyed

Hope that helps and idk if that's really confusing kinda got carried away writing it
