[Advice Needed] smartphone for my grandma!

Ey its Ozzy, and I need you guys.
My grandma bought a pc 2 years ago and went to school to learn how to use it..(lmfao, I fell down the chair when she told me she had a Facebook account, a pc).
Her birthday is nearing and we wanted to buy her a touch smartphone, tablet.
I've already found a used(perfect shape) iPad 2, 32gb +apple keyboard for 300€(not $).
I don't know how many people are invited, I approx know how much everyone will give(€) but the max budget is 600 total. So 300€ left for a smartphone.
I kept browsing and browsing these last days, I can't find something cheap, good.
My requirements;

-Front&Back camera.(5-8 MP)?
-300/350€ is the max budget.
-Has to be 'touch'.
-A smartphone that is easy to use. (ex: the gs3 would be too complicated for her to use, with all the widgets nd such,), she'd only use it to call us, read her mails, go on Facebook(lol again).
-NOT an iPhone.
-No need for a big GB/RAM but has to be 'easy' so no 'laggy' smartphones.(Some of my friends have weird phones, take 10 mins to open apps like temple run rofl).Has to be capable of the minimum.

Thank you!

Blackberries are easy to use.

Xavier 01-28-2013 06:50 PM

What's wrong with an iPhone? If you're already getting her an iPad, it would be the perfect pair since she would only have to learn one UI. It also fits all your requirements quite comfortably (except the one which specifically excommunicated it. :sarcastic:).

They aren't 100% touch?
I want something 100% touch, with virtual keyboard.

The android phones offer much more for their price-quality.
Apple's iPad's & macs are nice, etc... But the iPhone prices are ridicoulous and so...still thinking about it too.

Any nexus Google phone.

The fact your grandma has just learnt how to use one UI (Apple's) are you sure you want to put her through thst torture again? :P It may not seem so difficult for us to learn a new UI, but im sure its pretty damn annoying for the elderly.

I know you said not an iPhone, but I would play it safe and buy her an iPhone.

Totally agree, its just the thing that 1) she needs a new phone 2) need an ipad (facetime's pretty ez, amazin')
And IMO: having an iPhone and iPad is weird.(not for us) but in this case here. I totally agree with you too.

Hehe yeah, when your people like us who can easily adapt and find it interesting rather then torture when adapting to different interfaces and software, it would be wierd to just stick to one brand.

But im just thinking of the experience I had when trying to teach my grandma about the iPad, she bought one and she would not stop nagging me for weeks on how to use it. Dx

Funny is my grandma went to school to learn how to use a pc. I found that incredible. She never asked me anything lmfao. I just installed her all the anti-virus shiz and so. She doesn't give up untill she reaches what she wants. But she reads and writes slowly... And android devices are more sophisticated/professional then apple's.
And imo apple's UI is easy, as you said. That's right.

I'll keep looking if I find something exeptional, but for now my choice is iPhone 4/4s+ iPad 2. Both apple devices, to make it easier.

Get a Windows Phone.
The tile interface is incredibly simple. The tiles also have clear text and big number notifications so it'll be easy for your grandma to see. There isn't pages of apps or widgets like iPhone or Android. Just the tile page and the app list, thats all there is to it.
It also has Facebook chat built into the Messaging on the phone. The FB app itself is pretty crappy though, its slow and missing a lot of features. The email app is great though.
The Nokia Lumia line has low end and high end Windows Phones and they all have a quality and durable build so you don't have to worry about Granny dropping and breaking the phone.
I know all of this because I used a WP for a year before it bugged out on me.

I don't understand the logic of getting her an iPad though but condeming an iPhone.
It would make using iTunes and being able to have everything in sync.

The galaxy s3 is not complicated. There's a starter mode for it. I've seen inexperienced people use the phone, like old people.

iHot 01-29-2013 11:59 PM

Just get her a flip phone.

twilit 01-30-2013 04:32 AM

dont make fun of the vintages iHot>:0 i still have a slide-out keyboard phone
go with the iPhone4S. Apples are easier to use than Android crap and i just havent warmed up to Windows tile interfacing... to me its ugly.

Apple is easier? What? That's if you're used to it. Android actually comes with a beginner mode. Have you ever had an android?

"Apple is better than Android and Windows because I'm the most familiar with it."

twilit 01-31-2013 05:39 AM

Did I say that? no. Ive used an Android and its crap. Windows' new boxy homescreen is just ugly, but it seems just as easy to use as Apple

Ash Ketchum 01-31-2013 06:27 AM

Buy her an iPhone, It doesn't have to be the latest the older ones are cheaper now!!

iPhone, iPad, iPwn, iSmack

Apple is all around simple you don't have to enable a beginner mode feature.

If you can't comfortably use an Android operating system it's not a case of Android being too complicated, it's a case of you being simple.

Laughed at "beginner mode".

"Simple" phones like iPhone and Windows Phone get old real fast. They're just boring all around. Simple is better for older people hence the original purpose of this thread.

It's not like Android is hard to use, it has more freedom and options, but it wouldn't be my first recommendation for an elderly woman.

It's still pretty easy to get around on.

By the way, does your Grandma need a touch phone? Get her a simple flip. It sounds as if you're trying to get her a un sophisticated smart phone, which are few in numbers. Get her something where she can call and text. I doubt she'll use any other features.

Rexx 02-01-2013 05:14 AM

It needs to have facebook doe.

Whatever happened to Facebook coming out with their own phone.

That's actually the problem; since she 'tried' my sis's iPhone 4/Saw my GS3 & iPad she was like "wow, I need that too"(long ago...).
She wants new stuff, something 'touch'.
The only thing that makes my dad want to buy her an iDevice over an android is because of facetime being easy to use, so she could call us for free(just trough internet) etc...
My dad wants to buy her an 4/4S. I would rather buy an used iPad 2(for the facetime, other features) and as she needs a new phone, an android, because they're cheap, amazing. Google phones look amazing...
I'll tell ya guys when we found what to buy.
And yeah she likes innovative stuff (untill now she always had a 'normal' nokia or whatever...)
But yeah, as stated above, she learned how to use a pc, so I think she can learn how to use a touch phone and its features.

Don't really have any suggestions, just wanted to say its cool what your doing for your grandma. Keep it up bruh.

The Doctor 02-03-2013 07:39 AM

My grandma still doesn't know how to use voicemail. She didn't know it existed in cell phones

Hey everyone!
I'd like to thank you for your recommandations, and to tell you that after many tries we ended up buying her the
HTC Windows Phones 8S (HTC WP8S) which is incredible for his price/quality.
Thank you all!

Windows 8 on the phones/tablets is actually really easy to use=p.

Good choice, but in my opinion, a Lumia 620 would be of been a better handset for a mid range windows phone experience due to the amazing exclusive apps Nokia is providing to its customers. Plus of the better hardware that Nokia brings to the table over a company like HTC, whose hardware isnt all that much reliable. I got a HTC 8x after i sold my Galaxy S3. Dont regret it one bit, but id rather have a Lumia 920. Too bad it isnt for Verizon.

David 02-08-2013 01:48 AM

My aunt is pretty oblivious to any kind of technology. I got her the Nokia Lumia 810 and she learned how to use it within a week. If I didn't have an iPhone I'd probably use it.

The main reason why i got rid of the GS3 in general is because im not to fond of Samsungs skin that they have over the Android OS. I rather have a pure android experience. And with that, it takes ages for other manufactures and carriers to push out android updates. Sooner or later, they wont push out a update for it at all when the phone is old news. Had experienced that with Motorola and i didn't want to go back. Sure its a great device, but id pick Windows over Android for a more unique and enjoyable user experience. Just personal preferences.

There's alternate launchers you can use plus ROMs and the XDA community does a fair job of keeping phones updated.
But you could have got a nexus, regardless of your service provider they get updates from Google.

I just cant back Windows Phone after having used one for over a year. Its a painfully over simplified OS and it gets old and boring fast.

Noobly 02-10-2013 05:12 AM

The Nokia Lumia 920 is pretty good, not as complex in my opinion (its a windows phone)
