Goat because you have never experienced this before, i understand where you're coming from and why you can't understand what Pimpsy is saying. Just remember, you cant blame the family because honestly, they have no experience dealing with mental illness. It took 5 years for my family, and let me tell you, those 5 years were the most painful five years.

I didn’t understand him because he seemed to contradict himself. He said hes dealt with it personally and has had family members go through it so when he said “people are selfish and don’t care about the pain they cause their family” then its when he lost me especially when he knows people dealing with mental issues are not thinking straight.

Im not saying the family should blame themselves but when that type of stuff runs in the family it might be reason to be more alert.

Whether Pimpsy has personally dealt with it or not is irrelevant, suicide is selfish (in most cases).

You are also right with your last point which you've been trying to get across for awhile, mental health issues need greater awareness and if somebody notices a friend or family member who may be at risk they need to do something about it.

Sometimes the family thinks its nothing or don't realize how big the problem actually is.
Parent's mentality: "My child would never do something like that"
