SAO would be an absolutely horrible introduction to anime. SNK is overrated, but exceptional in comparison.

SNK?

Watch SAO up to the end of the Sword Art arc, stop when it enters the ALfheim arc. Wasn't worth watching unless you skip to episode 23-ish. It was extremely generic and felt like one big filler.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Kyoukai no Kanata (Beyond the Boundary) can serve as solid entry choices if you're into the school fantasy genre. Kuroko no Basuke (Kuroko's Basketball) is getting very popular lately if you want to try sports.

Kyoukai no Kanata didn't grab my attention, it felt like a generic school anime with flat characters and the fantasy element wasn't great. More interesting school animes for me would be K-On!, Ouran High School Host Club and Nichijou.

My introductions to anime were (besides scattered episodes of Naruto, Pokemon, DBZ and A:TLA) the film Princess Mononoke, which is undoubtedly one of the greatest films of all time and Soul Eater, a 51 episode anime which was a fantastic introduction to action/comedy/fantasy genres. Soul Eater is a typical shounen at face value, however it has deeper underlying storylines and was overall very enjoyable.

My reason for not recommending SAO as a first anime is that it would be quite a turn off (for anyone really) to get invested in a mediocre show only to see it go downhill.

Can someone tell me what happened to Asuna and Kirito? I can't stand those ears in ALfheim.

Couldn't find a picture of the original.
But, the dub is okay..
Not really.
Find subs for RockMan EXE. Anything past EXE is ear grinding IMO...

My "intro to anime" was Highschool DxD.

Finished Danganronpa and really liked it,

need to finish Elfen Lied.

Spoiler
Asuna becomes damsel in distress, trapped in a cage and helpless. Kirito goes on an adventure, meets nice girl, girl falls in love with him - oh **** - that's his sister. Incestual complications ensue, they overcome it after like 8 episodes of "daisuki onee-chan~". Asuna tentacle scene, she drops a hotel key card from 30,000 feet cruising altitude and Kirito uses it to save her. But wait - there's more! The Xor of ALfheim tells Kirito to 1v1 him swords with irl pain, sexually harasses Asuna with BDSM elements in front of Kirito and then Kirito's Kayaba powers awaken and he smacks Xor 1v1. Then Xor looks for revenge irl, gets killed 1v1 again by Kirito irl. Asuna is saved, she can gtfo of NerveGear, they sleep together in real irl and they go out in real irl. Aincrad is recreated and Asuna's hair turns blue. The end.

And that's the ALfheim arc in a (terrible) nutshell.

You can always watch that extra episode that came out not too long ago.

It sort of summed up what happened in the entire series.

Should give you a brief visual of what happened in the second part of SAO.

Yeah talk about terrible.

There was that disturbing tentacle-rape scene in episode 21.

After that the series was just poison.

The first two episodes were okay.
Asuna shows up as a strong female lead, shortly after, turns into a token girl.
Man, Karrot-Top is an asshole..he just is so annoying...
