The coolest gay people are the ones who don't allow their entire life to revolve around their sexuality in meme-esque "I'm a vegan" fashion. I felt like in the late '90s/early 2000s, there was this certain pretentiousness from the gay community where everyone felt like they had to announce they were gay, and be fabulous, and seek attention at every turn due to their pride in something they have no hand in.

Being transgender is just now becoming "cool" and otherwise accepted, probably due to the whole Caitlyn Jenner thing. I feel the same pretentiousness oozing from the transgender community. I'll be happy in a few years when everyone is tired of hearing about it and transgenders can just be transgenders and it won't be a big deal or worth making a big deal over.

So you're saying that adding a text field on a form causes people to become assholes? I believe that if someone acts like an asshole after a text field is added to a form, they were already an asshole to begin with. I don't see why anyone would shame someone else for identifying with their assigned gender, while usually people are shamed for not identifying with their assigned gender. By assigned, I don't just mean people who grow up with one set of genitals and suddenly want the other kind, sometimes when the genitals of a person don't fit neatly into male or female, gender is assigned by surgically modifying genitals at birth, regardless of whether it's medically necessary, because the form the doctor has to fill out doesn't give them any other option.

If someone expects people to magically start using pronouns that aren't associated with gender presentation, they're going to have a hard time. They'll never be happy if that's really what their expectations are, because even the people who try to respect a preference of pronouns will fail quite often.

Meanwhile, giving false information to doctors? Where's that coming from?

I'm explaining where the resentment towards made up gender is coming from. I never said I was against a blank slate, but I do think it's stupid. I'm okay with a private option though.

Although some people would undoubtedly use it as a joke, I'd imagine it would be helpful to find others they can identify with, and would tell you more about a person in general. I guess a lot of people want to turn the idea into some twisted version of a moral panic because someone might write in Tomboy and that makes them uncomfortable with themselves.

The doctor's usually the one prescribing estrogen, testosterone, testosterone blockers, or what have you, so I'm sure they'd also be aware of any concerns regarding specific risk factors related to the sexual anatomy of their patient in general.
