how would farming even function?

I think a very basic version of Harvest Moon would be nice. You buy seeds, plant veggies and viola!: in no time you have a nice ripe veggie to sell in your selling box. :)

I say... Carrots, tomatoes, potatoes and one type of tree you grab and take apples from.

In HM you have special tiles that you put seeds in. You water them with a watering can, and soon they grow big. Grab to take into inventory. Then, you'd sell at a farming shop.

And maybe you can use the food to heal instead of selling it.

That's where the idea came from. Not sure when it went to actual farming.

Well, I'd rather farm for real. This isn't iClassic mind you.

I mean the whole concept of being able to make money in your house where it is less laggy than in the overworld.

HM is the best farming game series ever!!!! And instead of having it in your house, you could add a new house called a farm and you can pick the diff. Styles just like the house and gang house.
