Think of it as a form of counter culture. When we were teens the whole 9/11 thing made hating on Islam and MENA the "in" thing. Now, almost 2 decades later, the next gen is basically just countering that by defending it. I've actually seen redditors defending dictators in the MENA region claiming "atleast they weren't blowing eachother up back then" and that they're not capable of governing themselves democratically. (which is partially true but still)
