Their main staple food was maize. They relied on corn a lot of the time. It was something that gave life to them, and it makes sense to worship something like that. Royals and noblemen's parents actually attached planks to the sides of their childrens heads when they were babies to give them a corn-like look. They also hung beads on a girls forehead to train them to be cross eyed, as that was a sign of beauty.
It's no different to how their was an ancient Greek god of hygiene, or death, or love. They're just gods for parts of life.
More fun facts: Ancient romans used crushed beetles on their faces, geishas used bird poo for their skin, ancient greeks used arsenic to make their hair blonde, and people used to use crocodile fat to get rid of wrinkles.
