Yea lol. I'd start out drawing just a head from scratch, turn it into an entire sprite sheet later if you like it. What I did with my first graphics

Don't use what people call "templates", the only template you should use is the official hat template. Not the whole file, it gets you into the habit of just editing when you should be making from scratch.

Making things from scratch is a lot of work, and he just wants to learn right now. Editing is an easier process for beginners, plus it let's them see what kind of colors and shadings other people have used in the past and will give them a better understanding of the basic structure of hats, heads, etc.

Try getting used to making simple graphics and go from there. That's what I'm doing anyway. Here's a good link to check out if you're interested in getting started with graphics!
